Accommodations for Disability
Support for learners with a disability or a health need, and how to ask for it.
Amounts, windows and limits on this page are drafts that aali confirms before launch.
Our commitment
aali wants every learner to take part fully. If you have a disability, a long-term health condition or a learning need, we change the way, not the standard: the completion requirements and the pass mark stay the same, and the route you take to them changes.
Examples of accommodations
- extra time for assessments and submissions;
- captions and written transcripts for recordings and sessions;
- materials in formats that work with screen readers, and suitable text size and contrast;
- flexible deadlines and breaks in live sessions;
- an alternative form of assessment, such as an oral answer in place of writing.
How to ask
- Write to the accommodations team well before the course starts if you can; you may ask at any later time when the need appears;
- describe what gets in the way of your taking part and what would help. You do not have to explain your medical condition in detail;
- we may ask for a letter from a professional that supports the need, and we help those who do not have one to get what is needed.
What happens next
We reply within five working days (draft) with a specific proposal and agree with you what suits you. There is no fee for any accommodation. It applies to all the courses you enrol in while the need lasts, and you can adjust it at any time.
Temporary conditions and events
You can ask for an accommodation for a temporary condition, such as an injury or recovery from surgery, and it ends when the need does. For aali events and meetings, write to the organiser or support a reasonable time ahead so that we can prepare the place and means, such as step-free access, a sign-language interpreter or a written text of the talks.
Confidentiality
Only the accommodations team sees your request and its papers. Teachers learn what is needed to carry it out, such as extra time, but not the reason. The condition does not appear on your certificate or in your study record.
If your needs change, tell us and we will update the accommodation; you do not have to start a new request from the beginning.
If the accommodation offered is not enough, or your request is refused, ask for a review under the appeals policy.
