Community Questions
Answers for members and organisers. This page is a draft, and some details, such as the platform's address, are not settled yet.
Navigating the community
Joining, the invitation, finding people, and what others see of you.
Who can join the aali community?
Everyone who completes a course or programme at aali. While you are still studying you can enter the space of your own cohort. Joining is free and does not depend on buying more courses (draft).
How do I get in after I finish my course?
Once your completion is recorded, we email an invitation to the address on your account. Accept it, create your profile and agree to the honor code. The platform's address appears in the invitation [platform: to be confirmed].
My invitation has not arrived. What should I do?
Check your spam folder and the address on your account first. If it is not there a few days after your completion shows in your account, write to support with your name and the name of your course.
How do I find people from my course, city or sector?
Each course has a space for its cohort, and the boards are organised by topic, city and sector. You can filter the member directory the same way; it lists only those who chose to appear in it.
What do others see on my profile?
Members see your name and the courses you completed. You decide whether to show your employer, city and way of contact, and you can hide your profile at any time.
Networking
How to start a conversation, find study partners, and control what reaches you.
How do I start a conversation with someone I have not met?
Begin with what you share: a course, a board topic or an event. Write a short first message that says who you are and why you write. A member may decline to reply, and that is fine.
Can I message any member?
You can message members who allow messages. A member can turn them off, block you or report them, and repeated unwanted messages break the conduct policy.
How do I find a study partner or a peer group?
Post in your cohort space or on the boards what you want to study and when. Several members may form a small group; aali does not assign partners and does not promise mentors, since the groups are voluntary.
Can I share a job, a request for work or my business?
Use the space set aside for opportunities. Keep your post factual, one post per topic with no repeats, and do not use the other boards to sell or recruit. aali does not check or endorse any opportunity.
How do I stop notifications or leave a group?
Open the notification settings in your profile to mute a board, a group or the whole community. To leave a group, choose Leave on its page; you can rejoin later.
Events
What goes on, how to take part, and what to know about cost, recording and access.
What kinds of events happen in the community?
Virtual panels and talks, book clubs, local meetings and, from time to time, a larger gathering of learners. The calendar shows what is coming [events programme: draft].
How do I find and join an event?
Open the events calendar in the community or the events page of this site, and register with your account. You then get a confirmation and a reminder before the day.
Do events cost anything?
Many are free for members. If an event has a fee, it is shown before you register. An organiser may not charge without aali's agreement [fees: to be confirmed].
Are events recorded?
Some are, when this is announced in advance. You may keep your camera and microphone off or use the chat. Do not record, or share a recording, yourself without permission.
How do I ask for access support at an event?
Write to the organiser or support when you register, and the accommodations policy applies: step-free access, a sign-language interpreter, captions or a written text of the talks.
Organisers
For those who volunteer to organise a meeting or lead a group.
What does an organiser do?
An organiser is a volunteer learner who sets up meetings or events for a city, sector or interest. They welcome members, keep to the code and report problems.
How do I become an organiser?
You need to have completed a course, to be in good standing under the honor code, and to apply with a short plan. The team replies and gives a short briefing [criteria: draft].
Does aali help organisers?
We give guidance, a template for announcements, a place in the calendar and a point of contact. As for funding or venues: [support for organisers: to be confirmed].
What are the rules for an in-person meeting?
Pick a public, well-lit venue and announce the place and time in the calendar. Say plainly who is welcome, keep to the honor code, make reasonable arrangements for access, and collect no personal data or fees without aali's agreement.
What if something goes wrong at my event?
Start with people's safety, ask the person to stop or leave if needed, and tell support the same day. We take it from there under the conduct policy; you are not expected to investigate.
Guidelines
What we expect of members, and how we deal with breaches.
What are the community rules?
The honor code and the conduct policy: respect, honesty and discretion, with no harassment, no discrimination and no selling on the boards. Read them when you join; they apply in every space.
What happens when someone breaks them?
We hear the people involved and choose a step that fits: a conversation, a warning, a limit in a space, a suspension or removal. The decision can be reviewed under the appeals policy.
How do I report a concern?
Use Report on a post or profile, or write to support. You can ask that your name be kept from the other person as far as fairness allows [confidential channel: to be confirmed].
Can I promote my business or my other courses here?
Only in spaces that say so. Promotion elsewhere, including private messages to members, is removed. Recommending a book or a tool within a discussion is welcome.
Who sees what I post, and can I share it?
Members see it. Treat other members' stories as confidential: pass on what you learned, not who said it, and do not post screenshots of private spaces without permission.
